D-Panthenol

D-Panthenol

What is D-panthenol?

Panthenol is a common ingredient found in skincare products. It's a provitamin of B5, also known as pro-vitamin B5 or dexpanthenol. When applied topically, panthenol is converted to vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), which has moisturizing, soothing, and healing properties for the skin.

How does this ingredient work in skincare?

Panthenol is known for its ability to attract and retain moisture in the skin, making it effective for hydrating dry or dehydrated skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help soothe irritation and redness. Additionally, panthenol can support the skin's natural barrier function, aiding in its ability to protect against environmental stressors and maintain overall skin health.

Study shows that when panthenol is used in formulation over the course of three to four weeks, it has the potential to improve the appearance of the skin, reduce dryness, roughness, scaling, pruritus, and erythema.  2% is a very commonly studied concentration that has effects on the skin, hair, and nail.

How does this ingredient compare to others?

There is D-panthenol, and D,L-panthenol. D-Panthenol is the biologically active form of panthenol that is most commonly used in skincare products due to its superior efficacy in providing moisturizing, soothing, and skin barrier support benefits. DL-Panthenol, while less potent, is still used in some cosmetic formulations for its moisturizing and conditioning properties.

Potential benefits of this ingredient for the skin

Panthenol is a versatile skincare ingredient that offers multiple benefits for the skin, including hydration, barrier support, soothing, and healing. Its gentle and well-tolerated nature makes it suitable for a wide range of skin types, some benefits are:

  • Moisture Retention: Panthenol attracts and retains moisture, hydrating and softening the skin. It's especially useful for dry or dehydrated skin, improving overall moisture levels and preventing moisture loss.
  • Skin Barrier Support: Panthenol reinforces the skin's natural barrier, shielding it from moisture loss and environmental stressors like pollutants. This strengthens the skin's defenses and resilience.
  • Soothing and Calming: With anti-inflammatory properties, panthenol soothes irritated or inflamed skin, reducing redness, itching, and discomfort. It's great for sensitive or reactive skin, promoting comfort.
  • Wound Healing: Panthenol promotes skin healing by stimulating cell proliferation and tissue regeneration. It accelerates recovery from minor wounds, cuts, or abrasions, making it useful for addressing skin concerns like acne or dermatitis.
